The San Francisco 49ers got hit with some unsettling news yesterday. Rookie wide receiver Michael Crabtree is threatening to sit out the 2009 season if the Niners don’t give him a deal guaranteeing more than $23.5 million. Even though Crabtree was selected 10th overall, he wants a deal that will pay him more than Darius Heyward-Bey, who was selected 7th overall. Crabtree feels he was the best WR in the draft and should be paid that way.
“We are prepared to do it,” David Wells, a cousin of Crabtree, told ESPN. “Michael just wants fair market value. Michael is one of the best players in the draft, and he just wants to be paid like one of the best players.”
As much as I love Crabtree and think he will be a Pro Bowl wide receiver… this is just a terrible strategy. Crabtree may end up being a better pro than Heyward-Bey, but the fact is he was selected 10th overall and should accept a salary for the slot. If Crabtree were to sit out an entire season he will make significantly less. There is no way he would be a top 10 pick in the 2010 draft after missing his entire rookie year. In fact, he may not be a first round pick at all. It’s a move that would cost him $15+ million.
The 49ers know this and they’ll stand their ground. The pick is the pick.

Mike, do NOT do this!! You are getting some horrible advice. This will only hurt you and no one else but you should you decide to go through with your threat. If anything, negotiate some sought of performance bonus based on your results on the field versus the the other receivers drafted this year. However, this is an argument you cannot possibly win. Oakland drafted Heyward-Bey ahead of you because for them he is a better receiver. It’s up to you to prove otherwise. Pre-draft hype means absolutely nothing! Just ask the teams that passed up drafting Jerry Rice! Your advisers are making you look really stupid and greedy. Please get humble, retract your demand and just go out there and play the game…well.

If what goes around comes around really is the case, maybe Michael Crabtree will sit out the entire season and then be snubbed by every team during the draft next year. The potential risk to future earnings is extreme. There is a pretty good chance that he would be drafted lower than he was this year thus further deteriorating his ability to demand the higher salaries. Not to mention the risk of not being able to physically perform as well by sitting out an entire year. How about he sings for the “big” money now and for every time he does not perform we deduct a percentage of his salary. Most of the rest of the wold has to prove their worth before getting the top pay. Maybe if we hold a draft representing the whiniest, greediest, most self involved players he would have been drafted higher. It is a wonder why attendence is declining at some major sporting events.

I loved that he was drafted as a Niner, now… not so much. I saw a fantastic idea on another site and I support it. Every week Crabtree sits out and listen’s to his jackass adviser and agent, lower the offer a bit. Makes sense since he is worth less for each week he misses on training camp.

Wore it a couple times and loved that I was prepared for the showing it off in the coming season. Now I can’t stand looking at that jersey and can’t stand that I bought it in support of you as a player. Take your #10 money like a man, prove you’re worth it and worth more like I think you have the potential for. At the end of that contract you can then be sure the team will pay you more because you have shown you are worth it. Crabtree needs to get off his pedestal and sign a contract. The reality is he was drafted AFTER Heywood-Bey, NOT before him. The contract offer is commensurate with the draft order. He needs to get out there and prove his worth . . . THEN he can renegotiate for more money after he has 2 or 3 years of receiving stats to back him up. If he doesn’t sign and holds out for the entire 2009 season, then he’s the biggest idiot for making the Niners waste a draft pick on him!
